Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the lasting legacy that people leave behind. Recently I lost two friends on the same day. These friends did not know each other and their lives were quite different but both left a legacy as avid supporters of this community and will be missed by many. My friend Skye spent her entire career working for non-profits. She organized some of the most elaborate and successful fundraisers for organization across the state. There was no party like a Skye Heeren party! Every comment on her Facebook page recalls what a big heart she had and how generous she was of herself. She loved to support small businesses and appreciated art of all types. Another friend, John Gale, was a law enforcement officer. Aside from being a father, that is all he ever wanted to be. John was not the kind of law enforcement officer you might see on television or social media today. He started as a School Resource Officer building relationships with kids and the community. Over his lifetime, he invested his time and talents in supporting young people and helping those that were in trouble. It’s times like these that cause us to reflect on those who have made an impact in our lives through the active role they played in our community. Like my two friends, our community is blessed with many people who support local individuals, businesses, and organizations through their civic involvement. I often wonder what northern Wyoming would be like if it weren’t for the lasting impact of folks like Edward A. Whitney, John D. Loucks, Bradford Brinton, Neltje and so many others. It’s true that their contributions may have been large in terms of dollars, but I would argue that it is the small things we do everyday that make a big impact. I encourage you to see that impact by enjoying some of the green space and trails that are maintained by the City of Sheridan, Whitney Benefits, and Sheridan Recreation District. Attend a concert and take time to walk around the beautiful Sheridan College Campus. Meet our local business owners and discover the treasures in their shops. Attend a local sporting event, a fundraiser or an artist reception – you will be amazed by the talent and passion in our community. I am convinced that the more we partake in our community, the more we will get out of it. We will have better relationships and we will be able to endure hardships and annoyances (like construction on Main Street!) because we are looking out for our neighbors and friends. I have learned a lot and built great friendships by participating in different community events and being on oversight boards for organizations such as Whitney Benefits. It is truly an honor to learn about the people whose vision shaped Sheridan County and to be a part of the continuing on their mission and vision. My hope is that we can all leave a legacy by playing an active and lasting role in our community. Nadine Gale Whitney Benefits Trustee
